CHICAGO – State Senator Omar Aquino is proud to announce $100,000 in grant funding coming to the 2nd District to support adult literacy programs.
“Literacy is a foundational skill that is essential for everyday life,” said Aquino (D-Chicago). “From securing stable employment to navigating health care systems, supporting literacy for our neighbors at every stage of life helps build stronger communities.”
The latest round of funding through the Illinois Secretary of State includes more than $28 million for library services and literacy programs throughout Illinois. The grants will enhance online catalogs at local libraries, support day-to-day operations and expand interlibrary loan programs. Funding also supports radio information services that provide local news and information to individuals who cannot read standard print materials. Literacy grants promote basic reading, math, writing and English language skills through adult, family and workplace literacy programs.

SPRINGFIELD – To ensure bad actors violating Illinois labor laws are held accountable, a new law championed by State Senator Omar Aquino will reinforce workers’ rights and streamline investigations.
“Workers uphold critical industries in our state from manufacturing and construction to health care and hospitality,” said Aquino (D-Chicago). “Illinoisans deserve to know that our systems of accountability are functioning as intended. Right now, our laws are unclear, making it more difficult for workers to receive justice after having their rights violated, and most importantly, get paid.”
House Bill 4725 will clarify that the Attorney General’s Workplace Rights Bureau has authority in all state labor and employment laws. The law will also require employers under investigation to allow the Workplace Rights Bureau to inspect the employer’s premises and records as well as interview employees during normal work hours or other reasonable times. Additionally, the law will allow the Attorney General to seek a court order if a witness fails to respond to a subpoena or refuses access to the premises, records or employees.

SPRINGFIELD – As private-equity backed hospital systems increasingly threaten access to care, a new law spearheaded by State Senator Omar Aquino will provide meaningful oversight of hospital ownership changes and services discontinuations.
“Across the country, we have seen it time and time again: private equity firms buying hospitals, slashing services, laying off health care workers or shuttering the facility all together,” said Aquino (D-Chicago). “When hospitals are treated as financial assets, it poses a serious risk to our state’s health care infrastructure. With this law, Illinois is stepping in to provide stronger oversight and safeguard access to services our communities depend on.”
